R.I.P. Kip! He lived at the corner of Cinderella and I was a neighbor on Snow White Drive. His dad would play catch with Kip and I in the yard. When I spent the night with Kip, his mother would make delicious potato soup. Jay H. and Kip would go frog gigging in the ditch by Kip's house, and, I even went once, but, the idea of eating frog' legs was below my refined palate' standards. When Kip spent the night at my house, we heard a noise outside and carried baseball bats around the house protecting my mom and three little brothers.
My father was transferred to Guam and we left from mid-5th grade to 8th grade. When we got back, Kip was a pretty good drummer playing, or soon to be playing with, the Daybreakers! In 9th grade at J.D. he threw passes to me as the QB before the season was cut short when the school board ran out of money.
Later that 9th grade year Kip pitched and I caught against Lake Shore Jr. H ( with Johnny Combs pitching and Gary Higbe catching) and Lake Shore heat JD 2-1, in the Duval County championship game. We drifted apart in high school ( I was always in the Dean's office and I never saw Kip there). When college time came around I chose UF ('73) and Kip chose FSU.
Kip was one of a kind and will be truly missed. We went to Miss Scott's Kindergarten when we were 3 and 4 years old and continued our friendship in Mrs McNeil's first grade class at Bayview, then at Cedar Hills, JD, Forrest and FSU. He said that I have known him longer than anyone since his family had all passed away. He was my 9th grade boyfriend for awhile and we stayed close through the years. I remember he would play drums on the back porch/room of his house and when you passed by you could hear him playing. It was always fun going to Mel Ott Field and watch him pitch for whatever baseball team he was on at the time. In high school, he and I were voted Best All Around and have our picture together in the yearbook. So many fond memories of a longtime, good friend. Love always and may you rest in Peace.
Very sad to learn about Kip's passing. In senior year, we acted in a school play, wherein our two characters had a humorous exchange of lines. Kip delivered his line so perfectly and he was so funny that (I'm not making this up) the audience interrupted the play with a standing ovation. Like Diane, I recall Kip pitching at Mel Ott field; he struck me out a lot!
